The story behind the hat

Well, if you see me right now, you see that I’m wearing a Who is Esther hat. Interestingly, there are only two versions of this hat – only two copies. I’m wearing one of them, but the other one is being worn by a very special young man across the pond.

His name is Amiel, and he’s the person who donated his bone marrow to me so that I could survive leukemia and cancer. I met him for the first time a number of years ago; he flew to Canada from overseas. I got a chance to spend time with him and his wife, and it was just a fantastic thing. I had two hats: one for me and one for somebody else. It just seemed like the right thing to do to say, ‘Amiel, here is a Who Is Esther hat, and please wear it with pride,’ because if it wasn’t for your stem cells – your bone marrow donation – this musical wouldn’t be.
